 Original Home
built by David Lovett c.1820

The grounds at Hillsborough have exchanged some interesting hands over the
years and the house and Tasting Room are a little more mature than your average
winery. George William Fairfax, son of Col. William Fairfax, originally owned
the land. George William was a close childhood friend of our first President,
George Washington who along with his half-brother Lawrence, lived with the
Fairfax’s at their estate in Mount Vernon. Later George William married the
charming Sally Cary Fairfax, the woman with whom Washington was enamored and to
whom he wrote a love letter shortly before he married Martha Custis.
George William sold the land to James Nelson in 1778 who later sold it to
Andrew Hesser in 1797. In 1806 Hesser sold the plot to William Thompson, who
sold it to David Lovett(1760-1841) just 6 years later. One of 11 children,
David built the original house on the land in the earlier part of the 1820’s.
At the time the original construction consisted of the 2 story original field
stone house. The adjacent barn, which now serves as the Tasting Room, was built
sometime later in that decade.
The land and home
eventually passed to John Jones, Sr. and his heirs in 1839 who later sold it to
Mahlon Stocks in 1868. It is believed that Mahlon owned the land for quite some
time and eventually sold it to Mr. William B. Curtis in the early 1900’s. Mr.
Curtis built the 1-½ story field stone addition to both sides of the original
house around 1940. In the early 1950’s, Hans Rudolph Stamm was commissioned to
build the remainder of the house. The present owners, The Baki family,
completed final renovations to both the house and Tasting Room in early 2003. |
