From the moment you enter the property there is a sense of peace and tranquility unique to Hillsborough Vineyards. The Blue Ridge Mountains and the endless miles of lush rolling hills serve as the backdrop to 36 acres of grapevines that surround the Tasting Room. Trickling koi ponds, wisteria adorned verandas, and old stone barns make you will feel as if you are lost in the French countryside. Immaculate gardens encapsulate you in serenity and fill the air with the sweet smell of roses and lavender. A spacious stone patio, sheltered from the sun, provides the idyllic ambiance to enjoy a bottle of wine among family and friends. A selection of gourmet cheeses, sausage, and fresh baked breads, along with seasonal light fare provides the perfect compliment for each of the award-winning wines. If you prefer, you can enjoy a picnic under the vine-covered pergola, or relax on one of the many Adirondacks under the sun. There are also many secluded nooks on the property ideal for a quiet and romantic escape. Plus, with one of the largest indoor sitting rooms complete with a great stone fireplace and original paintings by local artists, Hillsborough Vineyards is the perfect getaway any time of the year. 		Zeynep and Bora Baki, with their two sons Tolga and Kerem, moved to the Washington D.C. area from their native land of Izmir, Turkey in 1979. With little more than their possessions at the time, Bora quickly realized the American dream and became a successful entrepreneur. After 23 years and several profitable businesses that have little to do with agriculture, Bora decided to retire to the beautiful Loudoun Valley countryside. Unable to sit still for long, the family fondly remembers Bora's thoughts in the winter of 2002, "I need a hobby. I think I'll grow a couple of vines and make some wine for me and my friends." At the time, his family wasn't aware that Bora considered the entire metropolitan Washington area to be his personal friends. And with this retirement vision of a restless entrepreneur, Hillsborough Vineyards was born.

		The grounds at Hillsborough have exchanged some interesting hands over the years and the house and Tasting Room are a little more mature than your average winery. George William Fairfax, son of Col. William Fairfax, originally owned the land. George William, a close childhood friend of our first President George Washington, lived together for a while at the Fairfax’s estate in Mount Vernon. George William Fairfax sold the land to James Nelson in 1778 and it exchanged hands several times until David Lovett bought the plot in 1812. One of 11 children, David built the original 2 story field-stone house on the land in early 1820. The adjacent barn, which now serves as the Tasting Room, was built sometime later in that decade. Exchanging hands furthermore, the land was purchased by Mr. William B. Curtis in the early 1900’s. Mr. Curtis built the 1-½ story field stone addition to both sides of the original house around 1940. In the early 1950’s, Hans Rudolph Stamm was commissioned to build the remainder of the house. The present owners, The Baki family, completed final renovations to both the house and Tasting Room in early 2003.

		Of the 36 acres located in Hillsboro Virginia, over 13 acres are planted with vines split into three fields. The West field located just past the Civil War era stone wall is planted with Fer Servadou a red French grape. The upper East field located in front of the Tasting Room is planted with both Petit Verdot and Tannat, both of which are red varieties originating in France. The lower East field located in from of the Estate is planted with Petit Menseng a white French varietal. The North field located on the hilly slope behind the Tasting Room is home to our Cabernet Sauvignon. The varietals chosen and planted at Hillsborough are not only ideal for the northern Virginia microclimate, but yield fruit of exceptional quality. Meticulous care is given to the maintenance and cultivation of our plants with emphasis on environmentally friendly forms of pest management. Every aspect of the annual growth cycle is carefully planned and managed. Leaving nothing to chance, we foster an ideal environment for superb grape production.
